THE CONECTION BETWEEN US

Love, and the affairs of the heart we explore from the 5th house, Marriage from the 7thhouse – to be examined from both the Lagna and Chandra Lagna – and in some cases from Venus as the lagna.

The 5th house in the “natural” zodiac rules over the physical heart, the “pitter pat” or the increase of beating when we find ourselves physically attracted to another person. Sun, the natural ruler of the 5th sign Leo represents the soul, or the atman. The King, who wants a kingdom, -- so he seeks out a partner to love in order to create that kingdom.

The 4th house, who rules over the domains of nurturing and emotional comfort – represents the heart chakra, or the metaphysical heart – the aspect of the “heart” that feels expansion when we are overwhelmed by emotions. When our emotions reach out, and we feel our chests expand with warmth and emotional feeling for another person. Or, when we feel overwhelmed with emotion -- when we view a wonderful vista, a sunset, or our child or football team winning in competition! That is the heart chakra and it is located in the center of your chest – where you point to yourself when you say “I am” and state your own name. The physical heart of course, is located just to your left side of your chest.

The Moon, the natural 4th house ruler -- who has domain over our mind and the desires of our mind represents the emotional aspect of our mind – and thoughts that make our heart expand when we think about our love(s). Romantic love, or love for family, even love for our spiritual advisors, teachers and gurus – all belong to the realm of the 4th house and the Moon.

Mercury rules over the intellectual aspect of the mind. Mercury, with his winged feet – speeds into action to manifest the desires of the mind. Moon (mind) says, I want love in my life. Mercury (intellect) says, “How am I going to manifest love in my life, to satisfy the desires of the Moon (mind). Then, Mercury sets about to make a plan, create a list of what must be done. Work on improving the self, take a workshop on relationships, decide the qualities we want in a partner for copasetic happiness, join an online dating service, join a church or temple. Then have a compatibility study done to learn if the chosen partner (by the Mind’s desire) is a logical choice for long term happiness.

This brings us to Mars, the planet of passion, ambition, drive and manifestation. Mars starts the ignition. Venus, the planet ruling over love, beauty, and refinement -- is the car. (Venus incidentally is the karaka or signifying planet representing vehicles). Mars and Venus basically signify Passion and Love. Chemical love. The physical chemistry of two connecting. If a woman’s Mars aspects a man’s Venus it will cause him to be attracted to her, and vice versa.

We will take for example, the poles of a magnet. Let’s say that Mars rules the South direction and Venus rules the North. (For purposes of this explanation, Mars actually does rule over the South direction, however Venus rules over Northeast.) We all know that the opposite poles attract; south and north cling to each other. And, everyone has experienced the repelling of the same pole alignment. North and North, South and South – identical, yet when put in closer proximity they begin to repel, pushing each other away. So a Mars connection to another’s Venus brings attraction. Mars to Mars or Venus to Venus manifests more as ‘brotherly” or “sisterly” love. Where both will be passionate about the same things or both will “love” similar things. Venus in Sanskrit means semen – or the procreative fluid in both sexes that work together to manifest a new physical form.

Jupiter represents marriage, and the husband. It is the natural 9th house lord. Ninth house rules father, guru, preceptor or advisor. Jupiter of course, rules over the natural 12th house as well. The 12th house, often called “the house of the couch,” refers to the bed. The first two nakshatras of Pisces, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada represent a “cot”. Shakti, the energy or kundalini expression in connecting belongs to the domain of the 8th house (naturally ruled by Mars and the sign Scorpio), as do the physical reproductive organs, internal and external.

Saturn brings stability, structure and endurance to a relationship. Saturn also brings us our life lessons. (It resides by transit in a sign for 2 and ½ years – compared to the Moon who moves through a sign in 3 days and a nakshatra in 1 day!) Often we recommend marriage to someone within a couple of years of your own age. One reason, beyond the obvious one of shared life experiences at similar ages, is that likely, in many cases the couple will share the same Saturn by sign placement. They will be working on similar life lessons that produces more harmony.

And now we think about the actual houses in which these planets reside, and how that changes the picture in connection. Say one individual has Saturn in the 1st house or ascendant. They will be working on the Self, intensely setting about to solve the dilemmas of identity determining how to improve the Self. Perhaps learning about the Self by experiencing certain illnesses they must overcome. (The first house rules the body as a whole, and Saturn, who restricts, can bring illness and physical complaints. And the other person has Saturn in their 7th house. That person will set out to “perfect” their partner – which can bring disharmony – but when they begin to perfect their own self (Saturn aspects the ascendant by opposition from house 7) then harmony between the two can occur.

Rahu and Ketu, the nodes of the Moon represent our karma. Karma, the law of action that what goes out – returns. When the nodes hook up with other planets – it changes their expression, as does any conjunction. However, they additionally manifest the karmic plan – or the soul’s intention or “plan” for a given life. For example, Rahu aspecting Venus creates unusual love; it makes you love in an unusual way. You might love your same sex; you might love 40 cats; or you might even contract sexual disease as Rahu rules over the domain of poison, and Venus of course rules semen. Ketu with Venus can manifest as erratic love – Ketu is like cleaning out the closet to get new clothes – so Ketu aspecting Venus can give love – then take it away – granting us the experience of learning the lessons of love. This is especially true of a Venus/Ketu conjunction in the 6th or 12th house. The 12th is the house of the ashram, or the recluse. Venus in the 12th literally means – loves God or the idea of moksha as the 12th is also the house of enlightenment, just as the 8th is transcendence or meditation experiences. Ketu, the moksha karaka (significator of enlightenment) in the 12th – puts the karmic focus on 12thhouse matters. Of course, the 12th house represents anything reclusive in nature, what you would likely not do in public – sexual expression – meditation – secluded in an ashram or monastery. It can also represent hospitals and prisons. The 12th house sign that Venus and Ketu are posited in, and which house numbers Venus rules (along with the strength of Venus and influence from other planets and factors, define which experience manifests. Some examples to think about:

Aries: Venus/Ketu in Pisces in the 12th house
Venus is lord of the 2nd house of family life and the 7th house of partnerships and marriage. Further, Venus exalts in Pisces. Similarly for Scorpio: Venus/Ketu in Libra in house 12, and Venus rules the 7thhouse and the 12th house where Venus is in its own sign of Libra. In both cases, love will repeatedly be “lost” if there is not a spiritual connection between the two. The 12th house, is the house of loss. It is the house of enlightenment. Ketu alone in the 12th is said to bring enlightenment. Ketu is Rahu’ s body. Ketu has no head. For enlightenment, you must transcend the ego. If there is no head – there is no ego. So Ketu is moksha karaka for this reason – and with any Venus in the 12th the person will want love (Venus) to be spiritual (Ketu).

Finally and certainly not last, we come to the Lagna and its connections. Basically four elements exist -- Fire, Earth, Air and Water. The trines from each other are always the same element and compatible. Also, Fire goes with Air and Water goes with Earth. It is said that opposites attract, and the opposites are all Fire and Air or Water and Earth. I personally believe that some opposite rising signs are compatible and some are less so. For example, Aries and Libra work for me as their respective rulers, Mars and Venus are neutrals. (Not enemies or friends and friends would be better but the rulers of all oppositions are either neutral or enemies).

Take Cancer and Capricorn – Moon, the fastest planet rules Cancer. Saturn, the slowest planet rules Capricorn. Sure, they are earth and water signs, and certainly in the planetary scheme the Moon has no enemies, but Saturn still creates a sadi sati with the Moon, temporarily restricting the Moon as it transits for 7 and ½ years through the house behind, of, and after the position of the Moon.

However, Cancer can be very emotional (the Moon changes through the whole zodiac, and 27 nakshatras in a MONTH – that would make anyone thrown off a bit, and can make a Cancer person feel needy or rather needful of being grounded) and Capricorn can be very staid, sober and detached (Saturn takes 2 and ½ YEARS to go through one sign, and 30 years to go around the whole zodiac).

So, the way to decide if this particular example would work is to find the Moon and Saturn of each person to see if they are in aspect.

Combinations for Love. Relationships and Marriage:

  • Rising signs in Trines (same element)
  • Rising signs opposite
  • Sun aspects another’s Moon (conjunct or opposition)
  • Mars aspects another’s Venus
  • ·
  • Mercury in good relation to another’s Mercury (same Mercury can be very good, but less so if the Sun sign is also the same. Two people with the same Sun sign is like two kings in one castle – and can create conflict through competition. I find this can work for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces a little better than other signs, especially Leo where it can be troublesome
  • .
  • The nakshatras between two people are compatible (Kuta agreements and Tarabala)
  • The absence of malefics like Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu aspecting the other person’s benefics. Like Saturn conjunct someone’s moon, or Mars aspecting someone’s Saturn
  • Speaking of Mars and Saturn. If in one individual’s chart there is a malefic Mars/Saturn conjunction or other aspect, opposition as well – it is wise to connect to another with a similar situation. If one partner is a Mars/Saturn and the other is not – the one who is not suffers.
  • When the ruler of the rising sign, aspects the ruler of the partner’s rising sign it is good.
  • Even moons or lagnas in a difficult axis like 2/12 (say Pisces/Aries) or 6/8 (say Pisces/Libra) can still have harmony if the rulers, Jupiter and Mars or Jupiter and Venus aspect, connect or if they are friends.
For example: Pisces is ruled by Jupiter and Aries by Mars. If the Person with the Pisces rising or moon has their natal Jupiter aspecting the Mars of the Aries moon or rising person it produces compatibility. Additionally in this example, Jupiter and Mars are friends – increasing the compatibility.

The different flavors play out when you examine the quality and strength of the Mars and Jupiter, based upon the sign where each are posited. Is Jupiter in Capricorn opposite the other’s Mars in Cancer? See what I mean? This would be the debilitation signs for Jupiter and Mars – then this 2/12 axis would not be advised. Or is the Jupiter in Sagittarius and the Mars in Taurus (throwing its 8th aspect to Sagittarius) or Gemini (aspecting by opposition) – this would prove challenging as Jupiter in its own sign would be well placed, yet connecting with a Mars in a neutral or enemy’s camp – not so good!

Currently Mars transits for a few more months in its friend’s sign of Leo, although retrograde till April 13th. Venus is currently in Aquarius and Mars aspects now by opposition, and in a few days Venus moves into exaltation in Pisces. When this happens, Mars will aspect, by its 8th aspect the exalted Venus which might make a few new “love” connections form. Just be sure you also have the Sun / Moon connections with your choice. Mars to Venus is often just combustion and chemistry. Sun/Moon connections can make a relationship last forever.
