THE SHADBALA OR SIX SOURCES OF STRENGTH

Planets like human beings have friendship, enmity and neutral relationship with each other. This is of two types. One is the permanent and the other is temporary. By friendship and enmity we mean that THE RAYS OF ONE PLANET WILL BE INTENSIFIED OR COUNTER ACTED BY THE OTHER.
PlanetFriendsNeutralEnemies

Planets become Friends or Neutral depending on their sign positions. Planets in 10,11,12, 2, 3, 4 positions from any other become its temporary friends. Those in the remaining sign become temporary enemies. Both these types are taken into consideration while judging a Indian horoscope. Thus the relation changes into what is called as final for that horoscope.
Permanent friend+Temporary friend=Best friend
Permanent friend+Temporary enemy=Neutral
Permanent enemy+Temporary enemy=Bitter enemy
Permanent enemy+Temporary friend=Neutral
Permanent Neural=Temporary friend=Friend
Permanent neutral+Temporary enemy=Enemy

Thus the 12 signs of the zodiac become for each planet either, Own house, Friends house, Neutral house, Enemy house or Bitter enemy house. Besides the planets have points of Exaltation and Debilitation where it gets full strength or none. These points fall exactly 180 degrees to each other

Tabulated these would be:
PlanetDegree of exaltationDegree of debilitation
SunAries 10 DegreeLibra10 Degree
MoonTaurus 3 DegreeScorpio3 degree
MarsCapricorn 28 degreesCancer 28 degrees
MercuryVirgo15 degreesPisces15 degrees
JupiterCancer5 degreesCapricorn5 degree
VenusPises27 degreeVirgo27 degree
SaturnLibra 20 degreeAries 20 degrees

The above tables combined together what is known as planetary "avasthas" or mode and shad bala chart or six-fold strength.

A planet can be in :

DEEPTA OR EXALTATION: - can give gains, respect, wealth, fame, and good progeny.
SWASTHA OR OWN HOUSE: - fame, wealth, position, land, happiness.
MUDITA /FRIENDS HOUSE: happiness

DEENA/RESIDING IN INIMICAL SIGN: - Jealousy, mental worry, brains trouble, sickness and degradation.

THE 'SHADBALA' OR SIX SOURCES OF STRENGTH

Each planet depending on its position gets certain strength in a horoscope. This is measured numerically in units called Rupas. These are:
· Sthana bala or positional strength.
· Digbala or the directional strength.
· Chesta bala or motional Strength
· Kala bala or temporal strength. Moon, Mars and Saturn are powerful in the night, Sun, Jupiter and Venus are powerful in day, and Mercury is powerful both in day and night.
· Drug Bala or Aspect strength
· Naisargika bala or Permanent natural strength. The order of strength is Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars and Saturn in descending order.
