NAVAMSA PROGRESSIONS IN JYOTISH

Dear Astromedico (what is your real name please? Thanks!)

The principle of progressions based on Navamsas is based on the following: We know that one Navamsa equals 3:20 degrees of zodiacal arc, and thus we also know that there are 108 Navamsas within a 360 degree zodiac. Now, in Jaimini, as well as Parasari astrology, 108 years is taken to be the Paramayus, or maximum longevity of human beings. Arising out of this understanding, there are a number of Ayur (longevity) dasas, most important of which is Shoola dasa, which assign 9 years to each rashi (sign) dasa. 12 signs, or 30 degrees, x 9, thus equals 108. If we thus assume that 30 degrees of a sign, or rashi, equals 9 years, then 3:20 degrees (one Navamsa) equals 1 year. So based on these principles, we can progress the lagna, Sun, or Moon at the rate of 1 Navamsa per year, until we reach the Navamsa, or 3:20 degree portion of a sign, wherein a specific planet or significator may be placed. this can be very effective in timing the events pertinent to that planet or significator.

Example:

Supposing the lagna in someone's chart is 1 degree of Libra. Supposing also, that Mars (the 7th lord), or Venus is at 1 degree of Aquarius, and you want to find out the time when marriage, or at least significant relationship opportunity, will come to that person. Now, we know that 1 Navamsa, according to the above progression equation, equals 1 year of life, and that there are 9 Navamsas in each sign. Thus 9 Navamsas equal 9 years. Between 1 Libra and 1 Aquarius there are 4 x 9 Navamsas intervening, and thus at the age of 36, the person may get married.

Now, depending on which of the three of lagna, Sun, or Moon is stronger in the birth chart, you may progress time according to 1 Navamsa = 1 year until you reach the Navamsa occupied by a planet or significator, and thus time the event. You can also progress forward, or backward through the zodiac in order to reach the planet in question. You can also progress the lagna, Sun, or Moon at 1 Navamsa per year to specific points in the chart, such as Sahams, which are points indicating specific areas of life. Mrtyu-bhaga, or death-inflicting degrees, are very important to longevity, and are mentioned in the Jataka-Parijata. In order to time death, or physically/mentally challenging events, you can progress the lagna at one Navamsa per year, until you reach a planet that is situated in Mrtyu-bhaga.

Try to experiment with the above method, and report back to the Jyotish Discovery.com Forum on any interesting examples that you can find!

Best wishes,

Robert Koch
